Hairline cracks are normal. Wide, spreading cracks are not. They let water in, and winter makes them worse.
When slabs shift, they create a lip. That is a trip hazard, and a liability if someone falls.
Tree roots and frost heave are the usual culprits.
See the surface flaking or pitting? That is spalling. Salt and freeze damage break down the top layer.
Water should run off, not sit. Pooling means the slab has settled or sloped the wrong way.
Standing water freezes in winter and speeds up the damage.
Most concrete sidewalks last a couple of decades. If yours is older and worn, replacement beats patch after patch.
A single cracked section can sometimes be replaced on its own. Widespread damage usually means a full replacement.
